While instantly popular among diehard Porsche enthusiasts, just 395 Porsche 911 Carreras were produced for the US market during 1975. Compared to lesser 911’s, it featured more comprehensive equipment, amenities, and trim, including electric windows, sunroof, rear spoiler, larger wheels, and of course the legendary `Carrera` script. However, the motor was the same as in the standard 911S, which caused the car to come under considerable scrutiny. This particular car, though, has been fitted with the motor that Porsche used to answer these complaints, a 3.0 litre version of the venerable air-cooled flat-6. The motor in this car is from a 1978 911 SC and received a top end rebuild, with dyno sheets showing it making 156hp and 159 ft/lbs of torque, measured at the rear wheels. ARP head studs were used, as were Carrera cam chain tensioners. The rebuild was done approximately 15,000 miles ago. The car also has a number of tasteful and effective upgrades, which reflect its enthusiastic ownership. One of the most desirable of these is the 16 by 7 and 8 inch Fuchs, which are in exemplary condition, and fitted with new tires. The car also has an adjustable rear sway bar, aluminum brake calipers, and Blistein up-side-down front and sport (green) rear shocks. A pair of later mirrors has also been installed, in addition to a front valance with integrated fog lights from a Carrera 3.2 (1984-1989). A correct chin spoiler is also installed and looks extremely nice. European Bosch H4 headlights have been fitted; in addition to the more attractive European rear bumperettes.
Cosmetically, the car is quite nice. The paint is an older, fair quality repaint, consistent with the value of the car, which has shined up nicely. All bodywork and panels appear straight and generally free of corrosion, a remarkable feat for an early 911. The glass and lights are very good with the exception of one cracked fog light, and the rubber is in very fine shape. Especially noteworthy is the excellent condition of the chin spoiler. The wheels are extremely nice, especially the rims, which are in unmarked condition.
The interior is in similar condition to the exterior. The seats are free of significant deterioration, and aside from being slightly misshapen, are extremely nice. The leather appears to be original and it has survived beautifully. The dashboard is extremely nice, and is free of any cracking or discoloration. There are no center vents, suggesting that the car has always been a non-air conditioned example. The carpets have been redone and the rear seats removed with Carrera lightweight carpeting in its place. The trunk was done to match and is very tidy. The car is fitted with a recent stereo with CD player and new components in the doors.
The car is quick, nimble, and very sporting to drive. The brakes, engine, and transaxle operate as they should. This car has an early 911 exhaust system, and makes that classis Porsche exhaust note we all know and love.
Underside is straight, solid and totally rust free. The rebuilt motor is dry and fresh when viewed from below. It is fitted with a 915 series gearbox with a close ratio gearset and limited slip differential.
This car would make a superb driver, and thanks to its upgrades, it bridges the gap between older 911s and more recent ones very well. Because it is a 1975, it is smog exempt in California, which introduces almost limitless possibilities for further improving the performance of the motor while still remaining street-legal. Another desirable early feature is the opening rear quarter windows, which were discontinued for 1978. In all other respects, this car is comparable or superior to a later SC, thanks to its thoughtfully applied upgrades.
With the car comes the original owner`s manual, dealer locator booklet, tool roll, and records from the recent ownership periods. Of limited production, and epitomizing 911 model, this turn-key Carrera provides strong performance and presentation at an entry level price with investment potential to boot.
